The discovery of unmarked graves on the grounds of residential schools shocked our nation. Canadians across the country are reminded that, to realize the Canada that we aspire to create, we must have honest conversations about our history and how it informs today’s public policy so that everyone who lives on this land can enjoy peace, justice, and security. Today, September 30th is the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Let’s mark the day with reflection and discussion in the spirit of truth and reconciliation.

Please join us in congratulating Laura Moon, who has, with immediate effect, been appointed as CCHC’s new Manager, Primary Care. 5 years ago, Laura joined Central Community Health Centre from Parry Sound where she had been successfully practicing as a Nurse Practitioner in a Family Health Team. Since joining CCHC, Laura has distinguished herself as a leader among her colleagues and in the community. She is a critical thinker who looks beyond the obvious for solutions. A true champion for those who face barriers to healthcare, Laura has grown our outreach programs among the Amish/Mennonite population, offered primary care at Inn Out of the Cold, worked on the CAMH pilot project for opioid de-implementation, is the CCHC lead for the diabetic offloading initiative with the LHIN, and has earned a reputation for excellence in transgender care. I know Laura will play an important role as we face a future of challenges and opportunities.

With the cooler weather upon us and winter approaching, you are being reminded of the importance of following the Smoke-Free Ontario Act. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act prohibits the smoking of tobacco, the use of electronic cigarettes to vape any substance, and the smoking of cannabis in enclosed workplaces and enclosed public places to protect workers and the public from second-hand smoke and vapour. If people do experience smoking in their workplace, they can report it by submitting an anonymous claim by visiting takeyourbuttoutside.ca and your local health unit will launch an investigation. It’s not just employees who can submit a claim but members of the public can also report smoking in an enclosed space if they witness it. Any individual who violates the prohibition on smoking or vaping in smoke-free and vape-free areas may be charged and if convicted, may face a fine of up to $5000.

CCHC is pleased to introduce a new member to our team of primary care professionals and allied health professionals. Nafisa completed her Bachelor of Health Science with a specialization in health promotion at Western University and a Master of Public Health at the University of Guelph. “I am excited to play a positive role in the health of our clients and community members,” says Nafisa. “I hope to connect with our clients and community members to hear their health needs and promote partnerships with local organizations so that we can better serve the communities in our catchment area.” As a health promoter, Nafisa will look at the health needs of the clients and communities served by the CCHC, and determine programs and services that can slow or prevent the progression of disease as well as promoting healthy lifestyles. This can include creating programs or services that teach new skills, provide education, or provide harm reduction strategies on a variety of health issues such as mental health, chronic diseases, and substance use. The Central Community Health Centre located at 359 Talbot St. is a place for community members to access a team of health care professionals including doctors, registered practical nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, a dietician, chiropodist, physiotherapist, and more. The organization strives to empower clients and communities to achieve optimal health and wellbeing. For more information, please visit www.centralchc.com or drop into our office to speak with Nafisa or one of our other qualified staff. You might also check our volunteer opportunities, and help make health & wellbeing a reality for all.
