Footcare: Chiropody & Podiatry

The Importance of Good Footcare:

By Said Chams, Chiropodist

“The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art”
– Leonardo da Vinci

Each foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, a network of more than 100 tendons, muscles and ligaments, and a vast pathway of blood vessels and nerves. Such an intricate mechanism deserves specialized attention and care, especially as an average person walks 128,000 kms in a lifetime – more than three times around the earth.

Foot problems can develop from injuries, hereditary traits, shoes that fit improperly or are poor quality, medical conditions, and the effects of aging. At CCHC, clients can access quality foot care through the services of a chiropodist.

A chiropodists is a recognized and regulated health professional who plays a key role in foot health. They are licensed by the College of Chiropodists of Ontario to assess and provide treatment that includes the management of acute and chronic foot related conditions. They also play a role in the prevention of injury and in promoting foot health and wellbeing. The CCHC chiropodist works closely with other medical professionals as part of the CCHC health care team, to provide therapeutic, surgical, orthotic and/or palliative means to treat and prevent foot problems.

CCHC clients can access the following chiropodist services:

Please Note: CCHC is currently without Chiropodist services at this time.

  • Routine nail care for high-risk clients (Diabetes and other systemic health issues)
  • Treatment of toenail problems (Fungus, Ingrown etc.)
  • Biomechanical Examination & Gait Analysis
  • In-office surgical procedures (Ingrown Toenail Surgery) Wound care/foot pain
  • Treatment for corns/calluses; flat feet/high arches; athlete’s foot/warts/fissures
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Diabetic foot care
  • Biomechanical assessment and gait analysis (the way you walk)
  • Orthotics

Diabetes and your Feet

Routine foot care is particularly important for people with diabetes, as diabetes can cause damage to nerves (neuropathy) in the feet, which may cause a loss of sensation making the feet more prone to injury. For instance, diabetic patients with neuropathy may not feel pain from an infected ingrown toenail. Chiropodists are trained to educate patients on the harmful effects of diabetes.
